In one of the most defensive games of the tournament, the Rockford Rams defeated the Avondale Yellow Jackets 38–35 in the semifinals of the MHSAA Division 1 Boys Basketball Tournament at the Breslin Center.

The win sends Rockford to the state championship game after grinding out a tough, low-scoring battle against one of the hottest teams in Michigan.

A Defensive Game from the Start

From the opening tip, both teams brought intense defensive pressure. Avondale, known for its fast-paced offense, struggled to find rhythm as Rockford slowed the tempo and forced half-court possessions.

Rockford’s defense clogged the paint and contested nearly every shot, making it difficult for Avondale to get easy baskets. The result was a physical, grind-it-out game where every possession mattered.

Rockford Controls the Pace

The key to the game was Rockford’s ability to control the pace. Instead of letting Avondale push the ball in transition, the Rams forced the Yellow Jackets to play slower and more methodical basketball.

That style worked in Rockford’s favor.

The Rams executed offensively when they needed to, hitting timely shots and capitalizing on key possessions late in the game.

Late Game Drama

Despite struggling offensively for stretches, Avondale kept the game close until the final moments. The Yellow Jackets fought back in the second half and had opportunities to tie the game late.

However, Rockford’s defense held strong in the final minutes, protecting their narrow lead and closing out the 38–35 victory.

Rockford Advances to the State Championship

With the win, the Rockford Rams move on to the state championship game where they will face the winner of the semifinal matchup between the East Lansing Trojans and the Brother Rice Warriors.

For Avondale, the loss ends a strong postseason run, but their season showed the strength and talent of the program.

For Rockford, the mission is not finished. One more game stands between them and a state title. 🏆🏀
