With the NFL offseason heating up, the Arizona Cardinals are wasting no time making key roster decisions. Just days before the start of the NFL free agency period, the organization secured two important parts of its special teams unit, re-signing kicker Chad Ryland and punter Blake Gillikin.

The moves ensure stability in a crucial phase of the game as the Cardinals prepare for what could be a busy offseason.

Keeping the Special Teams Unit Intact

By bringing both Ryland and Gillikin back on one-year deals, Arizona will maintain continuity on special teams for the upcoming season. The decision signals the team’s confidence in a unit that has quietly been one of the more reliable parts of the roster.

Ryland, who originally entered the league with the New England Patriots, found success after joining Arizona. In 2024 he connected on 28 of 32 field goal attempts, including several from beyond 50 yards.

Although his 2025 season had some inconsistencies, the Cardinals believe the young kicker still has strong upside heading into the new year.

Gillikin Returns After Injury

Arizona also retained Gillikin, signing him to a one-year deal reportedly worth up to $2.65 million.

Despite missing significant time last season due to injury, Gillikin has established himself as one of the league’s stronger punters when healthy. During his time with Arizona, he has averaged over 50 yards per punt, giving the Cardinals valuable field-position advantages.

Before joining the Cardinals, Gillikin played for the New Orleans Saints, where he first built his reputation as a consistent and powerful leg in the punting game.

Strategic Moves Before Free Agency

The timing of these signings is important. NFL teams often finalize internal roster decisions just before free agency begins so they know exactly where their needs lie.

For the Cardinals front office, keeping their kicker and punter allows them to focus on larger roster priorities such as improving the offense and defense when free agency officially opens.

With new leadership and a roster still being reshaped, the Cardinals are expected to be active in the coming weeks as they attempt to build a more competitive team in the NFC West.

Looking Ahead

While these moves may not make headlines like major free-agent signings, solidifying the special teams unit is an important step for the Cardinals’ offseason plan.

By retaining Ryland and Gillikin, Arizona ensures that two key roles remain stable as the franchise prepares for the next phase of roster building.

As free agency begins, all eyes will now be on how the Cardinals continue to shape their team for the upcoming NFL season.
